Weather…

The Convento de San Francisco in Granada is the oldest cloister in Central America and a cornerstone of Nicaraguan history and culture. Founded in 1529 by Fray Toribio de Benavente, one of the first Franciscan missionaries in the New World, the complex has served variously as a church, a convent, and even a fortress during pirate raids in the 17th century. In 1856, the original structures were nearly leveled by fire during the destructive campaign of William Walker, leading to significant reconstruction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it functions as a prominent cultural museum, most famous for its extraordinary collection of pre-Columbian basalt statues recovered from Zapatera Island. These monolithic figures, dating from approximately 800 to 1200 AD, represent deities and zoomorphic spirits of the Chorotega and Nahuatl peoples. The architectural layout, featuring a grand cloister and thick adobe walls, remains a prime example of Spanish colonial design. Visitors can explore the historical transition of Nicaragua from its indigenous roots to the colonial era within its beautifully preserved galleries and courtyards.
