Ananda Temple (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

The Ananda Temple in Bagan, built in 1105 during the reign of King Kyansittha, is widely regarded as the masterpiece of Mon-style architecture in Myanmar. Its distinctive cruciform layout with a central square core sets it apart from the surrounding stupas and temples. The structure is often referred to as the Westminster Abbey of Burma, highlighting its architectural perfection and spiritual prominence. Inside, four monumental standing Buddha statues, each 9.5 meters tall and carved from teak, face the four cardinal directions. The walls are adorned with over 1500 glazed terracotta tiles that depict scenes from the life of Buddha and Jataka tales in great detail. A notable feature is the gilded sikhara (spire) at the summit, which rises prominently over the Bagan plain. Following the severe 1975 earthquake, the temple was meticulously restored and was fully gilded in 1990 to celebrate its 900th anniversary. It remains one of the best-preserved and most actively visited religious monuments in the region.
