The 3.8-meter-tall bronze image was originally from the Arakan Kingdom and was taken as war loot by King Bodawpaya in 1784. Over centuries of devotion, male worshipers have applied so much gold leaf to the statue that its original form is now obscured by a lumpy, irregular layer of gold approximately 15 centimeters thick. The temple complex is a lively hub of religious activity, surrounded by stone-carving workshops and gold-leaf beating stalls.
