Senglea, also known by its Maltese name L-Isla, is the smallest of the 'Three Cities' and ranks among the most densely populated areas in Europe. It occupies a narrow, rocky promontory flanked by French Creek and Dockyard Creek within the Grand Harbour. The town was founded in the mid-16th century by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, who fortified the area and gave it its name. Senglea earned international fame for its resolute defense during the Ottoman Siege of 1565, after which it was bestowed the title 'Città Invicta' (the Unconquered City). At the very tip of the peninsula lies the Gardjola Garden, featuring the iconic 'Gardjola' watchtower decorated with symbols of an eye, an ear, and a crane, representing perpetual vigilance. The town's religious heart is the Basilica of Our Lady of Victories, which houses the miraculous statue of 'Il-Bambina', a focal point of intense local devotion.
