Basilica of Our Lady of Victories (Malta)

Weather…

The Basilica of the Nativity of Mary in Senglea, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Victories, is the spiritual heart of the city of L-Isla. The current structure is a faithful reconstruction of the 16th-century church that was almost entirely destroyed by massive bombing raids in 1941 during World War II. The original church was consecrated to commemorate the victory over the Ottoman Empire in the Great Siege of 1565. A particular highlight of the interior is the wooden statue 'Il-Bambina,' which depicts Mary as a child and is deeply venerated by the locals. The Baroque architecture of the basilica features a magnificent dome and richly decorated altars. Annually on September 8th, Senglea celebrates its town feast, which coincides with Victory Day and attracts thousands of visitors. The basilica stands as a powerful testament to the faith and unbreakable spirit of Senglea's inhabitants in preserving their heritage despite wartime devastation.
