Fort St. Angelo (Malta)

Weather…

Fort St. Angelo is a massive bastioned fortress located at the tip of Birgu, commanding the entrance to the Grand Harbour of Malta. Its history is incredibly long, with archaeological evidence suggesting fortifications on the site since Roman times, though it became most famous as the headquarters of the Order of St. John. During the Great Siege of 1565, the fort stood as the ultimate bastion of resistance against the Ottoman Empire, housing the Grand Master Jean de Valette and his command. Under British rule, it was commissioned as a shore station known as HMS St Angelo, serving as the Royal Navy's Mediterranean fleet headquarters for decades. The fort's strategic importance remained vital through World War II, during which it sustained significant damage from aerial bombardment. Recently restored, it now features a visitor center detailing its military evolution, while the upper portion remains under the sovereign jurisdiction of the Order of Malta, symbolizing a unique diplomatic link to the island's past.
