Għar Dalam Cave (Malta)

Weather…

Għar Dalam Cave, located on the outskirts of Birżebbuġa, is a site of immense paleontological and archaeological importance, representing the oldest evidence of human presence in Malta. The cave was formed by an underground river system during the Pleistocene epoch and contains a stratified sequence of deposits spanning several millennia. Excavations in the late 19th century revealed thousands of fossilized bones belonging to extinct species, such as dwarf elephants, hippopotami, and giant swans, which migrated to the islands during glacial periods. The upper layers of the cave provided the first artifacts of the Għar Dalam phase, dating back to approximately 5,400 BC, marking the arrival of the island's first farmers. Today, the site includes a museum that displays a vast collection of these prehistoric remains and detailed geological charts. Visitors can explore the first 50 meters of the 144-meter-long cave, observing the natural stalactites and the clearly visible archaeological strata along the walls.
