Floriana is a fortified town situated immediately outside the land front of the capital city, Valletta, serving as the ceremonial entrance and administrative hub of Malta. The town is named after the Italian military engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani, who designed the outer defensive lines (the Floriana Lines) in 1635 to strengthen Valletta's protection. Floriana is renowned for its grand architecture, expansive public squares, and numerous gardens, earning it the title of the 'garden city'. Its main square, Pjazza San Publiju, features the historic underground granaries known as 'Fosos' and is the venue for major national events and concerts. The Parish Church of St. Publius is a landmark of Maltese baroque architecture. Home to many government departments and the police headquarters, the town also features the Argotti Botanical Gardens and the Mall Gardens, which have been social landmarks since the time of the Knights.
