Rasdhoo is the capital of the small, round Rasdhoo Atoll, which administratively belongs to Alif Alif Atoll. The island has around 1000 permanent residents but is world famous among local and international divers. Just off the island lies the dive site Rasdhoo Madivaru, also called Hammerhead Point, where in the early morning schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks rise from the depths, a phenomenon reliably experienced only in a few places worldwide. Eagle rays, grey reef sharks and whale sharks also appear frequently. The island itself has a relaxed atmosphere with numerous small guesthouses, a bikini beach for tourists, local restaurants and a busy harbor. The economy depends almost entirely on diving and snorkeling tourism, supplemented by fishing and boat building. A school, a health center and a police post serve the residents. Its location between North Ari and South Ari Atolls makes Rasdhoo a strategic base for diving safaris.
