Hinnavaru is an exceptionally densely populated island in Lhaviyani Atoll, only three kilometers from the atoll capital Naifaru. About 4500 residents live on roughly 18 hectares of land, giving a density of over 25000 people per square kilometer. The island is the heart of industrial tuna processing in the northern Maldives, and the state owned Felivaru Tuna Processing plant lies just nearby. Hinnavaru has several ice factories for preserving the catch, a spacious fishing harbor and boat repair workshops using traditional tropical hardwood. Community life centers around the mosque, and the Friday market draws traders from the surrounding islands. Residents are served by a modern health center, a secondary school and a newly built sports stadium with an asphalt running track. The link to Naifaru is made several times a day by speedboat, making Hinnavaru an essential node in the atoll economy.
