Dhuvaafaru is a remarkable island in Raa Atoll because it is one of the few fully planned, repopulated islands of the Maldives. After the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004, the residents original island, Kandholhudhoo, was completely destroyed, and the roughly 4000 survivors were evacuated to other atolls. With support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the British Red Cross and the Maldivian government, Dhuvaafaru was rebuilt from scratch from 2005 onwards, featuring a modern water system, paved roads, solar power, a large mosque and uniformly designed houses. In 2008, the former residents officially moved in. Today around 4000 people live here, and the island has a secondary school, a health center and a busy harbor. Economically, life relies on fishing and on jobs in surrounding resorts such as Adaaran Meedhupparu and You & Me by Cocoon.
