The Tsiribihina River in western Madagascar is renowned for its calm waters and spectacular passage through the gorges of the Bemaraha Massif. It is formed by the confluence of several rivers originating in the central highlands and flows for about 120 kilometers before emptying into the Mozambique Channel. A river journey on traditional rafts or motorized boats is one of the island's classic nature experiences, providing glimpses of pristine landscapes and remote villages. Along the banks, crocodiles, waterfowl, and lemurs in the adjacent forests are frequently sighted. A highlight of the river's course is the Anosin'ampela waterfalls, which plunge into a natural pool. The river serves as a major transportation route for the local population, who use it to transport agricultural products such as tobacco and maize. Geologically, the river cuts through layers of limestone and sandstone, resulting in diverse shoreline formations.

Getting there

The Tsiribihina River is mostly navigated as part of organized tours starting in the town of Miandrivazo. Access there is via the national road from Antsirabe, before transferring to traditional pirogues or motorboats for the multi-day journey.

Best season

The main season for river trips is the dry season from May to October, when the weather is stable and camping nights on the banks are pleasant. During the rainy season, tours may be restricted or suspended due to high water levels and strong currents.

Terrain & paths

The route leads through spectacular limestone gorges, past waterfalls, and through wide, open plains. You typically spend the nights on large sandbanks along the riverbank, which during the day invite swimming or observing lemurs in the riverside forest.

What to bring

Complete camping gear, waterproof bags for valuables, and sufficient sun protection are necessary for the multi-day trip. Typically, sleeping bags and mats are provided by the tour operators, though this should be confirmed in advance.

In Miandrivazo, parking is available at hotels or at the tour operators' meeting points, where cars can be guarded for the duration of the trip. Often, a transfer service is offered to move the car to the river trip's destination in Belo.

You should only travel with experienced guides and be mindful of water quality as well as crocodiles along the banks. It is advisable to drink only bottled water and strictly follow the safety instructions of the crew during the boat trip.
