Mahajanga, a vital port city on the northwest coast of Madagascar, is strategically located at the mouth of the Betsiboka River as it enters Bombetoka Bay. Founded in the 18th century by Arab traders, the city once served as the capital of the Boina Kingdom before falling under Merina and later French colonial rule. Today, Mahajanga is the nation's second-largest port after Toamasina and acts as a major maritime gateway for trade with Africa and India. The city's atmosphere is a unique blend of colonial architecture, Islamic heritage, and the presence of a massive, centuries-old baobab tree in the city center, which has become the symbol of Mahajanga. The wide waterfront promenade, known as 'Bord de la Mer,' is a popular social hub that reflects the relaxed lifestyle of the coastal population. Economically, the city thrives on the export of rice, tobacco, sugarcane, and seafood, particularly shrimp and prawns. The local climate is hot and dry, contrasting sharply with the humid eastern provinces. Nearby natural wonders, such as the Cirque Rouge, a series of eroded multi-colored sandstone cliffs, make Mahajanga an important destination for regional tourism.
