Balykchy lies at the western end of Lake Issyk-Kul at about 1620 metres above sea level and is home to roughly 45,000 inhabitants today. Its name literally means fisherman in Kyrgyz and recalls the once dominant role of fishing on this salty alpine lake. The town developed from the 1870s as a Russian settlement called Rybachye and, during the Soviet era, became a significant industrial and transport hub, with wool-washing plants, a small shipyard and a dry dock serving the research vessels of the Soviet torpedo testing facility on Issyk-Kul. Today Balykchy is the terminus of the only railway line to Bishkek and the main transfer point for tourists travelling from the Chuy Valley to the beach resorts of the northern shore or the high pastures of the south. Since the collapse of heavy industry the town has struggled with high unemployment and increasingly relies on tourism and logistics.
