Uzgen is home to about 55,000 people today and lies some 50 kilometres northeast of Osh in the fertile Fergana Valley, on the banks of the Kara Darya River. The town has a history stretching back more than two thousand years and, in the 11th and 12th centuries, served as one of the three capitals of the mighty Karakhanid Empire, which ruled vast tracts of Central Asia from here. Surviving from that golden age are three baked-brick mausoleums and a well-preserved 27-metre-high minaret, today counted among Kyrgyzstan's most important architectural monuments and decorated with intricate stucco patterns and Kufic inscriptions. Uzgen is also renowned for its reddish-brown devzira rice, considered by connoisseurs the finest rice of Central Asia and the foundation of classical Uzbek-Kyrgyz plov. The local population is predominantly ethnic Uzbek.
