Tokmok, with about 60,000 residents, is an important industrial town in the eastern Chuy Valley, some 60 kilometres from Bishkek on the banks of the Chu River. It grew out of a Kokandi fortress that was captured by Russian troops in 1864 and even briefly served as the administrative seat of the region before that role passed to Bishkek. The local economy today rests on glass works, meat and dairy plants, cotton and wool combines and machine-building enterprises. Tokmok is also regarded as the cultural centre of the Dungan minority, descendants of refugees who fled China in the 19th century and still preserve their language, cuisine and elaborate wedding traditions. A few kilometres south of the town rises the famous Burana Tower, the last surviving fragment of the medieval Karakhanid capital of Balasagun and one of Kyrgyzstan's most iconic landmarks.
