Thury Castle
The Thury Castle in Várpalota, situated at the eastern edge of the Bakony Mountains, is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Western Hungary. Its history is inextricably linked to György Thury, the legendary castle captain who successfully defended the fort in 1566 against a massive Ottoman siege with only a handful of men. The stone fortress was founded in the 14th century by the Újlaki family, who established its characteristic rectangular layout with bastions at each corner. During the Renaissance, the Gothic structure was expanded into a representative palace, traces of which can still be seen in the valuable fresco fragments and carved stones. In the 17th century, the Zichy family took ownership and added Baroque elements, though the castle maintained its military silhouette. Following expert restoration in recent decades, the castle now functions as a museum, housing the Hungarian Chemical Museum and extensive collections of local history and weaponry. The inner courtyard and ramparts frequently host historical festivals and concerts that celebrate Hungary's frontier heritage.
