Szentgotthárd is the westernmost town in Hungary, located at the confluence of the Rába and Lapincs rivers, directly on the borders with Austria and Slovenia. Its history dates back to 1183, when King Béla III founded a Cistercian abbey here, inviting monks from France. The town's most significant historical event was the Battle of Szentgotthárd in 1664, where an allied Christian army led by Raimondo Montecuccoli achieved a decisive victory over the Ottoman forces. The current monumental Baroque Cistercian church and monastery complex was built in the mid-18th century and is famous for its intricate frescoes. In the late 20th century, the town emerged as a vital industrial center, notably hosting the Opel engine plant established in 1990. Beyond industry, Szentgotthárd is a growing tourist destination, featuring the modern St. Gotthard Spa & Wellness and serving as a gateway to the nearby Őrség National Park, known for its preserved folk traditions and nature trails.
