The Hungarian subsidiary of the Austrian multinational ADA has filed for bankruptcy protection due to deteriorating economic conditions. This move puts the livelihoods of nearly 600 employees in Körmend and the surrounding area at direct risk.
The government plans to build new expressway sections in the region with a budget of several hundred billion forints. Following the investment, the management of the road network will be handed over to private investors through long-term concessions.
Körmend is a historic town in Vas County, situated along the Raba River in western Hungary, near the Austrian border. First mentioned in 1238, it was granted royal city privileges by King Béla IV in 1244, marking it as one of the oldest towns in the region. The centerpiece of the town is the Batthyány-Strattmann Castle, a grand Baroque palace complex built on the site of a medieval fortress. For centuries, it was the primary residence of the noble Batthyány family and now houses a museum dedicated to the 'Doctor of the Poor', László Batthyány-Strattmann, including a unique historical shoe collection. The castle is surrounded by a 35-hectare English landscape park, which is a protected botanical garden with ancient rare trees. Beyond its history, Körmend is famous for its basketball culture, with the local team being a powerhouse in the Hungarian league. The town serves as an important industrial hub and a strategic gateway for international trade.
