Celldömölk is a historic town in Vas County, serving as the center of the Kemenesalja region in western Hungary. The town's identity is deeply rooted in its status as a major Catholic pilgrimage site, particularly the district of Kismáriacell, which houses a 18th-century Baroque basilica modeled after Mariazell in Austria. The Benedictine Abbey and its monastery, decorated with frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, are masterpieces of Baroque architecture. Dominating the local landscape is Ság Hill, a 5-million-year-old extinct volcano that is now a protected geological site and home to renowned vineyards. Historically, the town gained significance in the late 19th century as a vital railway junction, which spurred its urban and industrial development. Today, Celldömölk blends its spiritual heritage with modern tourism facilities, including the Vulkán Thermal Bath and the Kemenes Volcano Park, an interactive science museum.
