Church of Ják (Hungary)

Weather…

The Abbey Church of Ják is the most outstanding monument of Romanesque architecture in Hungary and a definitive symbol of the country's medieval heritage. Built in the first half of the 13th century (c. 1214-1256) as part of a Benedictine monastery, it was dedicated to Saint George by the noble Ják family. Its most iconic feature is the magnificent, deeply recessed main portal, ornately decorated with geometric patterns and statues of the apostles in its niches. The three-aisled basilica with its two imposing towers reflects the high artistic standards and European connections of the Hungarian nobility during the Árpádian era. Inside, visitors can find fragments of original medieval frescoes and intricately carved capitals depicting biblical motifs. The church underwent a comprehensive restoration around 1900 led by architect Frigyes Schulek, who aimed to preserve its authentic Romanesque character. Opposite the main entrance stands the small St. James Chapel, which originally served as the village parish church.
