Szécsény is a small historic town in northern Hungary, situated along the Ipoly River near the Slovak border, with profound significance in national history. The town is most famous for hosting the Diet of 1705, where Ferenc Rákóczi II was elected the ruling Prince of Hungary. The architectural centerpiece is the baroque Forgách Palace, which now houses the Ferenc Kubinyi Museum, displaying extensive archaeological and historical collections of the Nógrád region. Another iconic landmark is the 18th-century Fire Tower, which has a noticeable lean due to soil subsidence, often referred to as the 'Hungarian Leaning Tower of Pisa'. The Franciscan monastery and the adjacent Gothic-style church highlight the town's role as a spiritual center since the Middle Ages. Szécsény is part of the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark, known for its unique geological heritage. The town preserves its historic charm with cobblestone streets and well-maintained buildings that evoke the atmosphere of the princely era.
