Hollókő (Hungary)

Weather…

Hollókő is a historic village in Nógrád County, northern Hungary, which gained international recognition in 1987 as the first Hungarian site on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Tucked away in the Cserhát Mountains, the settlement serves as a living museum of traditional Palóc architecture and rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. The Old Village consists of 67 protected buildings, reconstructed after a major fire in 1909 to preserve their original 17th-century layout with whitewashed walls and wooden porches. Overlooking the village is the Hollókő Castle, a 13th-century fortress built following the Mongol invasion to secure the northern borders. The local community remains active in preserving their cultural heritage, frequently wearing intricate folk costumes and maintaining traditions like the Easter dousing festival. The village center is dominated by a Catholic church with a distinctive wooden shingle tower, which was rebuilt in its current form in 1889.
