Salgótarján, the seat of Nógrád County, is set among the scenic hills of the Karancs-Medves region in northern Hungary. The city underwent rapid expansion in the 19th century, evolving from a small village into a major hub for coal mining and heavy industry, which significantly shaped its urban character. This industrial heritage is preserved today at the Underground Mining Museum, the only one of its kind in the country, where visitors can experience the authentic atmosphere of underground labor. Perched on a prominent basalt volcanic plug above the city is Salgó Castle, built in the 13th century, offering panoramic panoramic views of the Hungarian-Slovak borderlands. For decades, Salgótarján was also internationally recognized for its glass manufacturing, a tradition still honored at the local glass museum. Today, the city serves as a gateway to the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark, the world's first cross-border UNESCO Geopark, famed for its unique geological formations and extinct volcanoes. The pristine natural surroundings, featuring Karancs mountain, often called the 'Olympus of the Palóc people', offer excellent opportunities for hiking and nature observation. Despite its industrial transition, Salgótarján has emerged as a modern cultural center, proud of its heritage and its unique geographical setting.
