Hortobágy National Park (Hungary)

Weather…

Hortobágy National Park, established in 1973 as Hungary's first national park, represents the largest continuous natural grassland in Europe. In 1999, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unique cultural landscape that reflects centuries of traditional pastoral land use. Covering 82,000 hectares, the park is characterized by alkaline marshes, meadows, and the iconic "puszta" landscape. Its most famous man-made landmark is the Nine-holed Bridge, completed in 1833 to facilitate animal transport across the Hortobágy River. The park is home to traditional Hungarian livestock breeds, including the Nonius horse, Hungarian Grey cattle, and Racka sheep, which are still grazed in the open air. During the migration seasons, the park becomes a major stopover for tens of thousands of common cranes. It is also recognized as an International Dark Sky Park due to the minimal light pollution.
