Debrecen is the second most populous city in Hungary and the most important center of the Tiszántúl region, often called the 'Calvinist Rome' due to its role in the Reformation. Twice in history, it served as the temporary capital of the country: in 1849 during the Revolution and in 1944 at the end of World War II. The city's symbol is the Great Reformed Church, where Lajos Kossuth declared the dethronement of the House of Habsburg and Hungary's independence. The University of Debrecen is one of the country's oldest continuously operating educational institutions and an internationally renowned scientific center. The highlight of the city's cultural life is the annual Flower Carnival on August 20, attracting thousands of visitors. Today, Debrecen is a dynamically growing industrial hub, particularly in the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors. In 2024-2025 Debrecen became Hungary's largest industrial investment hub: construction of the CATL battery plant and BMW's electric car factory continued in the northwestern industrial zone, promising thousands of jobs.
