Votive Church of Szeged (Hungary)

Weather…

The Votive Church of Szeged, officially the Cathedral of Our Lady of Hungary, is a landmark Neo-Romanesque building located in southern Hungary. It was constructed following a religious vow made after the catastrophic Great Flood of 1879, which leveled most of the city. Designed by architects Frigyes Schulek and Ernő Foerk, construction began in 1913 but was delayed by World War I, finally reaching completion in 1930. The cathedral ranks as the fourth largest building in Hungary, featuring two massive towers that stand 81 meters tall. Its interior is adorned with intricate mosaics, frescoes, and a grand organ consisting of over 9,000 pipes, making it one of the largest in Europe. The Dóm Square in front of the cathedral provides a well-suited setting for the Szeged Open-Air Festival, an event held since 1931 that utilizes the church as a dramatic backdrop for theatrical and musical performances.
