Szeged is the seat of Csongrád-Csanád County and the largest city in southern Hungary, situated on the banks of the Tisza River. Often called the 'City of Sunshine,' it is home to the highest number of sunny hours in the country. A defining moment in its history was the Great Flood of 1879, which destroyed nearly the entire city; the subsequent reconstruction, supported by international aid, gave Szeged its modern layout with ring roads and grand avenues. Its main landmark is the Votive Church (Cathedral), built on the monumental Dóm Square as a token of gratitude following the flood. This square hosts the Szeged Open Air Festival every summer, one of Europe's most significant cultural events. Gastronomically, the city is world-famous for Pick Salami, Szeged paprika, and its traditional fisherman's soup (Halászlé). Szeged is also a prominent scientific hub with a prestigious university and memorable Art Nouveau architecture, such as the Reök Palace. Construction of China's BYD electric vehicle plant, the company's first European factory, began in Szeged in 2024, reinforcing the city's role as an industrial and scientific hub of the southern Great Plain.
