Gyula is a historic spa town in Békés County, located near the Romanian border, and is famous for its well-preserved medieval brick castle. Built in the 15th century in Gothic style, the Gyula Castle is the only intact lowland brick fortress in Central Europe, now housing a museum and theater. Adjacent to the castle lies the Almásy Mansion Visitor Center, an interactive museum illustrating the daily lives of both nobility and domestic staff. The town is a prominent spa destination, featuring the Castle Spa (Várfürdő), situated in the former mansion park and utilizing thermal water from a depth of 2,005 meters. Gyula is the birthplace of Ferenc Erkel, the composer of the Hungarian national anthem, and his memorial house is a key cultural site. Visitors also frequent the 100-Year-Old Confectionery, established in 1840, which is the second oldest in Hungary and retains its original Biedermeier interior. The town's floral parks and historic charm make it one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Southern Great Plain.
