Șiria Fortress, historically known as Világos Fortress, is a medieval fortification located in Arad County, perched on a hill in the Zărand Mountains. First mentioned in documents in 1318, the fortress played a strategic role for centuries in defending the region and controlling trade routes between Transylvania and the Pannonian Plain. The fortification was held by prominent noble families, such as the Hunyadi family and later the Báthory family, highlighting its political importance. The architecture of the fortress exhibits Gothic and Renaissance elements, with massive walls constructed from local stone. In 1784, the fortress was destroyed by imperial troops during the Horea uprising to prevent it from becoming a refuge for the rebels. Today, the ruins offer a spectacular panoramic view of the Arad Plain and are a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Archaeological excavations at the site have unearthed numerous artifacts that provide insight into the daily life of the medieval garrison.
