Arad Fortress (Romania)

Weather…

The Arad Fortress was constructed between 1763 and 1783 under the orders of Empress Maria Theresa, serving as a prime example of Vauban-style military architecture. Located within a loop of the Mureș River, the pentagonal fortification features six bastions and extensive underground casemates. Throughout history, it functioned both as a strategic military outpost and a high-security prison, notably housing the leaders of the 1784 Horia revolt and the 13 Martyrs of Arad following the 1848 revolution. The defensive system utilized massive earthworks, brick walls, and deep trenches that could be flooded for added protection. Today, the fortress remains an active military base, which limits general public access to its interior structures. Its historical significance and well-preserved layout make it a landmark of 18th-century engineering in the Banat region.
