Szabadkígyós Wenckheim Palace (Hungary)

Weather…

The Wenckheim Palace in Szabadkígyós is a masterpiece of late 19th-century Hungarian historicist architecture, designed by Miklós Ybl for Count Frigyes Wenckheim and his wife Krisztina. Built between 1875 and 1879, the palace features a grand German Neo-Renaissance style and incorporates a symbolic calendar layout: 365 windows for the days, 52 rooms for the weeks, 12 entrances for the months, and 4 wings for the seasons. It was one of the most technologically advanced buildings of its era, boasting its own gas generator, an innovative air-heating system, and an internal telephone network. The most striking element is the 40-meter-high watchtower and the elegant courtyard loggia. Surrounding the palace is a 25-hectare English landscape garden with an artificial lake, which is now a protected nature area. Following a comprehensive renovation completed in 2022, the palace's representative rooms, such as the library and dining hall, have been restored to their former glory, housing interactive historical exhibitions.
