Eifel National Park (Germany)

Weather…

The Eifel National Park, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, was established on January 1, 2004, and currently covers an area of approximately 110 square kilometers. It is the first national park in western Germany specifically dedicated to the protection of Atlantic beech forests on acidic soil. The protected area is home to over 2,000 endangered plant and animal species, with the elusive wildcat and the black stork serving as key flagship species. Visitors can explore a trail network of more than 240 kilometers to observe the natural progression of the wilderness, as large portions of the land have been withdrawn from forestry activities. A prominent feature of the park is the former Vogelsang military training grounds, which now functions as an international information center documenting the region's history. Furthermore, the park is certified as an International Dark Sky Park, making it a significant location for astronomical observations free from light pollution. The landscape is defined by deep reservoirs, rugged rock formations, and dense broadleaf forests that provide a critical sanctuary for local biodiversity.
