Spreewald (Germany)

Weather…

The Spreewald is a unique alluvial and marshland landscape in southeastern Brandenburg, located about 100 kilometers south of Berlin. It formed as an inland delta of the Spree River after the last ice age and is characterized by a branched network of approximately 1,575 kilometers of waterways (known as Fließen). In 1991, the region was recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve to protect its biodiversity and traditional cultural landscape. The Spreewald is the historical settlement area of the Sorbs and Wends, who maintain their language, customs, and traditional costumes to this day. Transportation is classically conducted via Spreewald punts (Kähne), which are traditionally propelled with a pole. Economically, the region is world-famous for its Spreewald pickles, produced under a protected geographical indication. The dense alder carr forests and wet meadows provide habitats for rare species such as the otter and the black stork. Today, the Spreewald is a major destination for water-based activities and ecotourism.
