Sachsenhausen Memorial (Germany)

Weather…

The Sachsenhausen Memorial near Oranienburg is situated on the site of one of the Nazi regime's most significant concentration camps, which operated from 1936 to 1945. The camp held a unique position due to its proximity to Berlin and its role as a model and training facility for the SS. New methods of oppression and mass extermination were tested here, and it served as the headquarters of the 'Concentration Camps Inspectorate,' the administrative center for the entire camp system. Over 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned at Sachsenhausen, with tens of thousands perishing from starvation, disease, forced labor, and systematic murder. After the war, the site was repurposed by Soviet occupation forces as Special Camp No. 7 until 1950, during which time thousands more died. Today, the memorial documents the various phases of the site's history through exhibitions in original barracks and buildings. The remains of 'Station Z,' the primary site of mass executions, are particularly harrowing. The memorial serves as a central place of remembrance for the victims and a stark warning against totalitarian ideologies.
