Chorin Abbey (Germany)

Weather…

Chorin Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery located in the Barnim district and is considered one of the most significant examples of early Brick Gothic architecture in Brandenburg. It was founded in 1273 by the Ascanian Margraves after a previous attempt at Pehlitz on Parsteiner Lake was abandoned. The abbey served as the family monastery of the Ascanians and remained a vital economic and cultural hub until its secularization in 1542 during the Reformation. The complex is noted for its harmonious proportions and the sophisticated use of ornamental brickwork, particularly on the grand western facade of the church. In the 19th century, the ruins were rediscovered by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who recognized their historical value and initiated preservation efforts. Today, Chorin Abbey is famous for the 'Choriner Musiksommer' concert series, which has been held since 1964. Its scenic location on the banks of Lake Amtssee makes it a popular destination for hikers and architecture lovers alike.
