Nördlingen – Imperial city in a crater (Germany)

Weather…

The town of Nördlingen in Bavarian Swabia is located in the center of the Nördlinger Ries, an impact crater formed approximately 15 million years ago by a meteorite. The historic old town is surrounded by a completely preserved city wall with five gates and eleven towers, which can be traversed entirely on foot. The cityscape is dominated by the late Gothic hall church of St. George, whose 90-meter-high tower, called Daniel, provides a wide view across the Ries basin. A geological unique feature is the suevite stone used to construct many of the town's buildings; it contains millions of tiny diamonds created by the enormous pressure of the impact. Nördlingen was an important trading center in the Middle Ages at the intersection of major long-distance roads. Today, the Ries Crater Museum is a central starting point for visitors to understand the formation history of this globally unique landscape. The circular structure of the alleys bears witness to stable urban development within the defensive ring.
