Sigmaringen Castle (Germany)

Weather…

Sigmaringen Castle towers strikingly on a steep limestone cliff above the Danube and is considered one of the most important architectural monuments in Baden-Württemberg. As the ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, the complex looks back on over a thousand years of history, with its first documentary mention dating to 1077. The current appearance is largely shaped by the extensive 19th-century reconstruction work necessitated by a devastating fire in 1893. Particularly noteworthy is the Princely Weapons Collection, which, with around 3,000 exhibits, represents one of the largest private collections in Europe and documents the military history of the noble family. During the Second World War, the castle gained notoriety as the seat of the French Vichy government in exile between 1944 and 1945. Today, the building serves as a museum and remains in the possession of the Hohenzollern family, standing as a living testimony to German history and culture.
