Mkhaya Game Reserve (Eswatini)

Weather…

Mkhaya Game Reserve is located in the southeastern lowveld of Eswatini and is regarded as the country's premier sanctuary for endangered species. Established in 1979, its original purpose was to protect the indigenous Nguni cattle from extinction, but it soon evolved into a haven for rare wildlife. Today, Mkhaya is globally recognized for its intensive and successful conservation efforts for both black and white rhinoceros. The reserve's geography features thick acacia scrub and riverine forests along the Mphofu River. Because it is a private reserve that does not allow self-drive vehicles, it has an exceptionally tranquil and intimate safari experience. All visitors are accompanied by expert rangers, ensuring high standards of safety and wildlife protection. Mkhaya also hosts buffalo, giraffes, various antelope species, and a rich array of birdlife. The name 'Mkhaya' is derived from the Acacia nigrescens tree, which is prevalent in the area and defines the local landscape.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October is optimal for rhino viewing, as animals congregate around waterholes. In wet season (November-April) rhinos are more dispersed but the landscape is greener.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning between 6 and 9 is best as rhinos actively feed and drink. Late afternoon from 4 PM they become active again after spending the heat in shade.
📜
Etiquette
Always keep a minimum distance of 50 meters from rhinos - they are dangerous if threatened. Only leave your vehicle accompanied by an armed guide.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with good magnification are essential for safely observing rhinos. A camera with telephoto lens enables detailed shots without needing to approach.
