Mhlume lies in the northeastern Lubombo District in the fertile Lowveld and was created in the 1960s as a planned company town around the Mhlume Sugar Mill, today part of the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RES Corporation). With around 9,000 inhabitants, the town is a textbook example of a 'company town': most of the housing, schools, hospital and sports facilities were originally built and maintained by the sugar company. Mhlume produces about 220,000 tonnes of raw sugar each year, exported by rail through the line to the port of Maputo in Mozambique. The region is supplied by an enormous irrigation network that channels water from the Komati River through long canals to the fields. The climate is hot and semi-arid Lowveld, with summer temperatures often exceeding 38 degrees Celsius. Nearby attractions include Hlane Royal National Park, home to elephants, lions and cheetahs, and the Mlawula Nature Reserve on the edge of the Lubombo Mountains. Mhlume is therefore a key example of Eswatini's agro-industrial development and an economic backbone for the entire Lubombo region.
