Lubombo Mountains (Eswatini)

Weather…

The Lubombo Mountains are a distinctive 800-kilometer-long mountain range stretching along the borders of Eswatini, South Africa, and Mozambique. This geological formation consists primarily of rhyolite rock of volcanic origin and forms a steep barrier between the Lowveld to the west and the coastal plain to the east. Within Eswatini, the range reaches elevations of about 600 to 770 meters, with Mount Sheba being one of the most prominent peaks. The mountains host a unique biodiversity, including numerous endemic plant species and dense forests featuring the rare Lebombo Ironwood tree. Historically, the rugged terrain served as a natural shelter and was the site of various cultural rituals of the Swazi people. Several nature reserves, such as Mlawula and Shewula, now protect this sensitive ecoregion. Viewpoints along the crest offer spectacular panoramic vistas across the Mozambican plains toward the Indian Ocean.
