The Malolotja Mountains, part of the Malolotja Nature Reserve in northwestern Eswatini, house some of the oldest geological formations on Earth, dating back over 3.6 billion years. Belonging to the Drakensberg escarpment, the mountains offer a dramatic topography featuring peaks like Ngwenya Peak, which at 1,829 meters is the second-highest point in the country. Within the reserve lies the Ngwenya Mine, regarded as the world's oldest known mine, where hematite was extracted as early as 43,000 BC. The landscape is characterized by rolling grasslands, deep river valleys, and spectacular waterfalls, including Malolotja Falls, the highest in the country. The area is a biodiversity hotspot for rare flora such as proteas and cycads, as well as endangered birds like the Southern Bald Ibis. For hikers, Malolotja features one of the finest trail networks in Southern Africa, traversing pristine wilderness. The climate here is notably cooler and mistier than in the rest of the country.
