Maguga Dam Wall
The Maguga Dam Wall on the Komati River, near Pigg's Peak, is one of Southern Africa’s most significant engineering achievements. Standing 115 meters high, it is the tallest dam in Eswatini and was completed in 2001 as part of a joint water management project between Eswatini and South Africa. The structure is a clay-core rockfill dam stretching 870 meters across the valley, creating a massive reservoir with a capacity of approximately 332 million cubic meters. The primary purpose of the dam is to provide water for large-scale agricultural irrigation, particularly for the sugarcane industry, and to generate hydroelectric power via an integrated 20-megawatt power station. Architecturally and technically, the project has received international acclaim, including awards for excellence in civil engineering. The Maguga Dam Wall has not only transformed the regional economy through improved water security but has also become a tourist attraction, offering visitors striking views of the massive wall and the serene artificial lake it sustains.
