Ngwenya Mountain (Eswatini)

Weather…

Ngwenya Mountain is located in northwestern Eswatini, on the border with South Africa, reaching an elevation of 1,829 meters. It is internationally famous for the Ngwenya Mine, considered the oldest mine in the world; archaeological evidence confirms that hematite (iron ore) was extracted here as far back as 43,000 years ago. Indigenous people used the red pigment for ritual purposes and rock paintings. Geographically, the mountain is part of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, a region containing extremely ancient rock formations. The name 'Ngwenya' means 'crocodile' in the local language, referring to the mountain's silhouette, which resembles a reclining crocodile. Beyond its historical significance, the mountain is part of the Malolotja Nature Reserve and provides habitat for rare Protea species and highland birds. In modern times, industrial mining took place here until the 1970s, leaving visible scars on the landscape. The mountain stands as a symbol of humanity's long-standing connection with the earth's mineral resources.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The mountain is typically accessed through the main gates of the Malolotja Nature Reserve, where visitors must secure an entry permit. From the visitor center, marked dirt roads and hiking paths lead up to the ancient mine and viewpoints.
📅
Best season
The clear, dry winter season is usually the best time for hiking, as it features the most impressive, uninterrupted views across the landscape. Summer months bring beautiful green scenery, but afternoon thunderstorms are quite common and pose a risk.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trails leading up the mountain typically feature moderate gradients with some steeper rocky sections near the summit and the ancient mine. The paths are generally well-defined, winding through highland grasslands and impressive rock formations.
🎒
What to bring
Good quality walking shoes and sun protection are generally required due to the exposed, high-altitude environment. Carrying a windbreaker is also highly recommended, as temperatures and winds can fluctuate sharply near the impressive peak.

Parking
Secure parking is generally available at the reserve's main visitor reception and interpretation center. From there, visitors can either walk the full distance or drive slightly closer to the trailheads depending on the current road conditions.
⚠️
Safety
It is generally advised to remain on the marked paths to protect the fragile highland ecosystem and safely navigate around historic mining areas. Exploring the old mine pits without official supervision is typically restricted for safety reasons.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit to see the world's oldest known mine and enjoy the panoramic viewpoints usually takes around three to four hours. Those looking to hike further along the mountain ridges often dedicate a full day to the reserve.
