Faiyum is one of the oldest cities in Egypt, located in a depression about 100 kilometers southwest of Cairo. The city serves as the heart of the Faiyum Oasis, linked to the Nile by the Bahr Yussef canal and often called the 'Garden of Egypt.' In antiquity, it was known as Shedet (Greek: Crocodilopolis) and was the primary cult center for the crocodile god Sobek. Faiyum is famous for its unique wooden waterwheels (norias), which have been used for irrigation since the Ptolemaic era. The region is rich in archaeological sites, including the pyramids of Hawara and Lahun, and the world-renowned Faiyum mummy portraits. Today, Faiyum is a flourishing agricultural city, known for its production of fruits, cotton, and cereals. The nearby Lake Qarun is a significant natural reserve and a popular destination for birdwatching and eco-tourism.
