Ecologically, the region is invaluable, particularly due to the nearby fossil discoveries at Wadi al-Hitan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The lake itself serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds such as flamingos and ducks. Significant archaeological sites line its shores, including temples dating back to the Middle Kingdom.
