Historical site
Memphis was the first capital of unified Egypt and remained a major political, economic, and religious hub for over 3,000 years. According to tradition, it was founded around 3100 BC by the legendary King Menes, who diverted the Nile to establish the city at the apex of the delta. Memphis was the center for the worship of Ptah, the creator god and patron of artisans, whose temple was one of the grandest in Egypt. During the Old Kingdom, it served as the royal residence, which is why the great pyramid fields of Giza and Saqqara are located in its vicinity. Even after the capital moved to Thebes, Memphis remained a strategic fortress and cultural center until the rise of Alexandria. Today, much of the city lies beneath modern fields, but an open-air museum at Mit Rahina preserves impressive remains, including a 10-meter-long recumbent colossus of Ramses II and a massive Alabaster Sphinx.

Visiting
The ancient capital of Lower Egypt, Memphis, is an open-air archaeological site that can be visited daily. You can freely wander among the ruins, including the fallen colossus of Ramses II and the alabaster sphinx, providing a fascinating insight into ancient Egyptian history.
Typical hours
Opening hours typically follow the standard Egyptian site schedule, opening around 8 AM and closing by 5 PM in winter, 6 PM in summer. Since times can vary during Ramadan or public holidays, it is wise to check ahead, and the site may close earlier during certain festivals.
Photography
Feel free to take photos of the ruins with your camera or smartphone for personal memories. For professional shoots or tripod use, you must obtain a separate photography pass at the ticket office, and flash photography may be restricted inside certain structures.
Time needed
Expect to spend around one to two hours exploring the main area of Memphis, as the ruins are scattered. If you combine it with a visit to the neighbouring Saqqara necropolis, plan for at least half a day to cover both sites comfortably.

Getting there
Memphis is easily reached by taxi or as part of a guided tour from Cairo, located about 20 km south of the city, just off the main road near Mit Rahina. Public buses are infrequent, so a private car or tour is recommended for convenience.
Insider tip
Arrive early in the morning, ideally right at opening, to beat the heat and crowds, and wear comfortable closed-toe shoes. Bring ample water, a hat, and sunscreen, as there is minimal shade across the exposed site.
