Žďár nad Sázavou is a major town in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and an essential center of the Vysočina Region. The town's development was spurred by the foundation of a Cistercian monastery in 1252. Žďár gained international fame for the Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora, a masterpiece by architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel in the Baroque Gothic style, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994. The monastery grounds, now owned by the Kinský family, house the innovative Museum of the New Generation. In the 20th century, the town grew into an industrial hub following the establishment of the massive ŽĎAS machinery plant. Žďár nad Sázavou is also a well-suited starting point for hiking and cross-country skiing in the nearby Žďárské vrchy Mountains, a protected landscape area known for its pristine nature and photogenic rock formations.
