Hradec Králové, located in East Bohemia at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers, is one of the oldest and most significant cities in the Czech Republic. Its name translates to 'Castle of the Queen,' referencing its historic role as a dower city for Bohemian queens who resided here starting in the 14th century. The city's architectural landscape is uniquely divided between its medieval core on a hill and its modern districts. The historic center features the Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and the Renaissance White Tower, while the early 20th-century expansion earned the city the nickname 'Salon of the Republic.' Architects Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár designed functionalist brick buildings and wide boulevards that harmoniously blend with extensive parklands. This urban planning made the city a masterpiece of modern architecture in Central Europe. Today, it serves as a major university hub and is the home of the Petrof piano factory, which has produced world-class instruments since 1864.
