Trutnov is located in northeastern Bohemia at the foot of the Krkonoše Mountains and is regarded as the eastern gateway to the Czech Republic's highest mountain range. The city was founded in the 13th century on the Úpa River and is deeply connected to the legend of the Trutnov dragon, which still adorns the city's coat of arms today. Architecturally, the historical market square is particularly noteworthy for its characteristic arcades and Baroque town hall. Over the centuries, Trutnov served as a major center for the textile industry, which significantly fueled the region's economic growth. In 1866, the city was the site of the Battle of Trautenau during the Austro-Prussian War, an event now commemorated by a hilltop monument. For nature enthusiasts, the surrounding area provides handy conditions for hiking and winter sports in nearby mountain resorts. Today, Trutnov is a modern industrial city with an animated cultural life, functioning as a logistical hub for tourism in the Krkonoše range.
